Creating Wayfair’s App Design System

Year over year, Wayfair grew its app presence with users. My team led the this efforts to create a library of components, patterns, layouts and accessibility guidelines for all apps.

Challenge

How might we create a custom design system to meet Android and iOS needs?

Outcome

A design system catering to app with Figma components, code assets and documentation.

My Role

Led Homebase’s project scope, processes, design direction and delivery.

Background

At Wayfair, the Homebase Design System only supported web based teams for ecomm, supplier and internal tools. However, year over year, app customers continued to grow in numbers and were more likely to return for purchases than web. Homebase and the rest of the organization wanted to grow to support all customers and make their shopping experiences more meaningful.

Homebase’s (New) Mission Statement

With Homebase increasing its scope, we established a new mission to introduce ourselves to teammates that were unfamiliar with a design system.

Provide foundational guidelines and flexible, reusable components to enable Wayfair’s app and web teams to ship the best possible user experiences quickly.

TLDR: Enable teams to ship better products faster.
